It was in the summer of 1995 when the idea of putting up a school for the welfare of the poor but deserving students in the Island was established. The preorganization period of the institution was done by Dr. Sol F. Matugas who at that time served as the Regional Director of the Department of Education, Culture and Sports in Caraga. The brain lady whose primary purpose has been to cater to the educational needs of the average income earners in the island of Siargao was ably assisted by her son Francisco Jose F. Matugas, to establish Siargao Island Institute of Technology.

The school commenced its formal operation with permits granted by the Commission on Higher Education for the First Year levels in Bachelor in Secondary Education and Bachelor in Elementary Education and Associate in Computer Technology courses.

Classes during its first year of operation were held in the three classrooms at Gerona Building along Sto. Nino St. Dapa, Surigao del Norte. The first batch of faculty and staff was composed of the late Dr. Genevieve F. Guda, as the School Director with three full time teachers from Cebu City, namely, Raul G. de Castro Jr, Jonathan O Etcuban, and Rey Baquiquir, and from Siargao were Tomelyn Camingue Tinio and Nathaniel Congresso.

March 20, 1998 marked a remarkable date as the first commencement exercises were held for the first Batch of Candidates for Graduation from a two year Associate in Computer Technology. It was Regional Director Enrique M. Elnar of TESDA who was the Commencement speaker.

In the year 2000, the government gave recognition to the four year academic programs, the secondary & elementary Education, and the 2 year associate in computer science. The first batch of Education graduates passed the licensure examination for teachers and were eventually employed in the different schools and offices in the Island

The turning point in the history of SIIT

circa 2005-2006

By 2003, permits had been set to SIIT for additional programs, Bachelor of Science in Office Administration and Bachelor of Science in Criminology. It was also in that year that the Institution reached the 500 number of enrolled students.

The turning point in the history of SIIT was the construction of the first building to be owned by the school. It was the Don Mariano Matugas building named after the father of the then Congressman, the Hon. Francisco Tinio Matugas. This was the academic year of 2005-2006 when another rise in the enrolement was noted. It was also during this year that SIIT became a regular member of the Philippine Association of Colleges & Universities.

Considering the fast changes of technology and the need of technological skills, SIIT opened 2 more programs, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, to connect globally with the international need. These programs were also tied up with Microsoft Philippines and JobsDB Philippines.

Despite the continuing economic turndown, SIIT increased its enrollment in the SY 2010-2011 that reached more than a thousand students. In order to accommodate the increasing number of enrollees, SIIT had to move to another bigger building, a four-storey modern construction that housed the offices, a library and classrooms. The vacated Don Mariano Matugas building was converted into laboratories, a Speech laboratory, science laboratory, criminalistics laboratory, the office of the school publications, and the office of the Supreme student government

The two decades had seen four presidents that held the reins of the leadership of the Institution. Administrators and faculty members came and contributed much to the growth of SIIT, each of them leaving footprints on the education of the youth. The legacy and advocacies for the alleviation of poverty through literacy and for environmental care are foremost in the role and responsibilities of the school.

SIIT has always been responding to the call for the development of the nation, particularly of the island of Siargao. Its programs and extension services are designed to answer the needs of the people, particularly, the young. The school’s vision which is providing excellence and innovation in education to transform lives by being the preferred provider of globally competitive human resource has been deeply engraved in the minds of every SIIT’ian and every one works for the attainment of such.

A New Milestone..

The next twenty years is a new challenge for SIIT. The fast pace of the changes in the Island has given each one, time to reflect on his/her contribution for the good of Siargao and its people. This is everybody’s wish that somehow, someday SIIT achieves its mission and the real happiness for the people it serves.
